In June 2004 the Aquarium created the Center for the Future of the Oceans to inspire action for conservation of the oceans. Through the Center, we aim to empower individuals, influence policy and contribute to the protection of the oceans for future generations. We're focusing on four key areas that build on our current efforts and offer new ways to assure a future with healthy oceans.
1. |
Marine Protected Areas: We're supporting implementation of the California Marine Life Protection Act and efforts to establish monitoring, research and funding to enable effective long term management of marine protected areas along the California coast.
|
2. |
Ocean Policy Reform: We're promoting state, regional and national efforts to reform ocean policy and address past failures of ocean management and governance in the United States.
|
3. |
Sustainable Seafood: We're working with the public, restaurateurs, and major buyers and suppliers to transform the seafood market in ways that favor ocean-friendly fisheries and sustainable aquaculture (fish farming).
|
4. |
Protecting Wildlife and Marine Ecosystems: We're championing policies to protect key marine wildlife species in which the Aquarium has research and exhibit expertise, including sea otters, sharks, tunas and sea turtles.
